Cemetery Grounds Specialist

Position Description

Employee works as the leader of the Cemetery Grounds crew and is directly responsible for the overall landscaping and general appearance of Rose Hill and White Oak Cemeteries. Directly responsible for the supervision, training, safety, equipment operation, and performance of Cemetery staff. Performs a wide variety of grounds keeping, landscaping, and maintenance duties. Additional duties include by are not limited to:

• Maintains the grounds at Rose Hill and White Oak Cemeteries, including interior of Rose Hill Mausoleum.
• Performs turf repair, leaf raking, weeding/mowing, trash removal and mulching
• Performs regular maintenance of mowers and weed eaters and hand tools and keeps maintenance shop clean
• Maintains up to-date-records of crew’s daily activities
• Other duties as assigned (e.g. assist with interments and monument repairs; assist Operations and Urban Greenspace landscaping crews, etc.)

Skills and Knowledge

• Must have the ability to train, motivate, supervise, direct, and evaluate the work performance of subordinates. Two years supervisory experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of zero-turn and rear discharge mowers. Two years experience preferred.
• Must have the ability to properly assign the necessary resources to complete the job assignment in an efficient and safe
  manner and in compliance with maintenance standards.
• Skills in the safe operation of trucks, equipment trailers, riding mowers, push mowers, tractors, weed eaters, chainsaws, power tools, hand tools, and other related grounds keeping equipment.
• Working knowledge of mechanics and ability to perform safety/maintenance equipment inspections.
• Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.
• Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of performing physically demanding work.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.

Physical Effort

Must be in good physical condition. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is exerted by the employee in the setup and operation of equipment; including frequent bending, stooping, and the movement of extremities to operate equipment and perform work tasks. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting and loading of equipment and tools. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Employee performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to work sites with traffic, noise, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes.

Hours

8 hours per day, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, except holidays and during periods of inclement weather.

Season

March-November. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.

Salary

$19.85 per hour
