Natural Resources Vegetation Management Specialist
The person in this position is responsible for carrying out vegetation management and ecological restoration activities on Parks and Recreation-managed properties, tracking and reporting of daily work activities, and supporting volunteer vegetation management efforts.

- Monitors and manages invasive and other undesirable vegetation within Parks natural areas, urban greenspaces, along trails, and rights-of-way areas using a variety of techniques.
- Operates and maintains vehicles and small equipment, uses hand tools, and applies herbicide to implement natural resource management activities.
- Utilizes a range of vegetation management techniques, including the application of herbicides.
- Maintains accurate daily records of herbicide application and management activities.
- Utilizes ESRI ArcGIS Field Maps app and City asset management software to track daily work activities.
- Installs and maintains native plant restoration areas. Supports volunteer vegetation management efforts.
- Follows and initiates correct procedures during emergency situations.
- Performs related duties as assigned (e.g. assist other staff or areas within Operations Division, as needed).
Job Requirements
- Must have knowledge of invasive plants in Indiana and the Midwest, and prior experience with vegetation management techniques.
- Knowledge of forest, grassland, and riparian ecosystem management.
- Proficient in the safe operation of a range of tools and light equipment including hand tools, string trimmer, mowing equipment, brush cutter, chainsaw, pesticide application equipment, pick-up truck, small dump truck, and other related grounds keeping equipment and vehicles.
- Experience using GIS software to monitor and collect vegetation management and other natural resources data.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and team mentality, and must have the ability to communicate and work well with coworkers and the public.
- Must possess or obtain an OISC Certified Pesticide Applicators Registered Technician License within 30 days of hire.
- Must possess or obtain current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle required.
Difficulty of Work
- Work duties are moderately complex involving physical exertion and following general to complex instructions in various outdoor working conditions.
- The majority of duties will be performed outdoors on a year round basis, in a range of weather conditions. This may include extreme conditions such as high heat and humidity or cold temperatures. Work sites may involve exposure to ticks, mosquitoes, poison ivy, and stinging insects; as well as to noise, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes. Safety precautions, including use of City provided Personal Protective Equipment, must be followed to avoid injury and incident.
- Moderate to strenuous repetitive physical effort is exerted daily to set up and operate equipment, load and unload materials, and perform duties. This includes walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and movement of extremities necessary to navigate terrain, operate equipment, and loading of materials and equipment.

Hours:
- 8 hours per day, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 16 to 40 hours per work week, Monday – Friday availability, except on holidays and during periods of inclement weather. Work duties will vary with the season. Occasional evenings or Saturdays may be required.

Salary
$19.85 per hour
