Urban Greenspace Landscaping Laborer II

Position Description

Employee works as a member of the Urban Greenspace (UGS) Landscaping crew. Employee may take responsibility for landscaping of an assigned site. Performs a wide variety of grounds keeping and maintenance duties. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

Performs seasonal planting/transplanting and maintenance of plant material, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
Performs mulching, weeding/mowing, litter pickup, and invasive plant removal.
Performs regular maintenance of hand tools and keeps vehicles clean.
Other duties as assigned (e.g. watering, median cleanup, assist Operations and Cemetery Grounds crews, etc.)

Skills and Knowledge

Knowledge of and previous experience in landscaping, planting, and maintenance. One year experience preferred.
Working knowledge of annual and perennial plants (esp. native and invasive species), pruning, and plant installation.
Skills in the safe operation of trucks, tractors, weed eaters, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, power tools, hand tools, and other related landscaping equipment.
Working knowledge of mechanics and ability to perform safety/maintenance equipment inspections.
Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.
Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be able to perform physically demanding work.
Must have a valid Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record.

Physical Effort

Must be in good physical condition. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is exerted by the employee in the setup and operation of equipment; including frequent bending, stooping, and the movement of extremities to operate equipment and perform work tasks. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting and loading of equipment and tools. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Employee performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to work sites with traffic, noise, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes.

Hours

7 hours per day, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. 35 hour work week, Monday through Friday, except holidays and during periods of inclement weather.

Season

March–November. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.

Salary

$16.86 per hour
